Spanish PM must go if we join coalition, say Citizens

According to the Citizens Party, Mariano Rajoy, right, is “too tainted by scandal” for them to consider working with him

The price of forming a new Spanish government will be the resignation of Mariano Rajoy, the prime minister, potential coalition partners have warned.

Should no party win outright in Sunday’s election, as the polls predict, the market-friendly centrist Citizens Party (CP) are the most likely partner to form a coalition with Mr Rajoy’s centre-right Popular Party (PP).

However, the CP, which was born out of anger over a series of corruption scandals involving senior members of the PP with links to the prime minister, has refused to join an administration headed by Mr Rajoy.
